145 - DreadOut

Post by matt »

I talked about DreadOut a bit on the forums, but here's a video talking about my thoughts more in depth. I was less angry at dying a million times on the boss when I recorded it, so it's a bit more fair.

That's the reason why I liked Cursed Mountain so much, cause of how rooted the story is in Tibetan buddhist lore, and their version of the apocalypse and demons and such.

To me, Dreadout seemed more derivative of American and J-horror, which is a shame. And while I haven't played it myself (yet), I sort of doomed myself by watching other playthroughs of it. I made the decision not to do the same thing when the next chapter comes out, in case I decide to play it down the road.

But anyways, it does strike me as kind of poorly designed overall, which is a shame cause I can't remember the last time a game spooked me with the enemy design like this game does. They have a reeeeeally good art department getting weighed down by the people making the actual game part of the game.

It doesn't seem OVERLY Indonesian (very Fatal Frame-ian), but there are only like 5 ghosts (that I found anyway. I heard there are secret ghost bosses or something), and some might have been some inspired by folk tales or something.

As you mentioned, the enemy designs were one of the best things about it in my opinion (although the polygon review mentioned that a boss might be trans-phobic or something, which is not cool).
