112 - The Console Wars

Post by matt »

While it seems that most of our fans are mainly interested in PC and Ouya (which makes sense since that's what we are releasing the game on), there is a "CONSOLE WAR" going on. I am getting tired of reading stories about how it's already over, so I decided to give my own two cents:

I couldn't think of anything intelligent to say about the WiiU, but I don't think it's over for them either. They need an original Zelda, Smash Bros, and hopefully a game that actually justifies the darn touch screen. Personally, I'm most looking forward to Bayonetta 2 on the WiiU. :)

Haven't been involved in that "war" since the Playstation, so I can't really speak to any of that.
That said: MediEvil, woo! Croc! Tekken! Yay!
I actually set up my old Playstation again recently, it's awesome. :-)

Hahah! Those were the days! I was an N64 guy back then. Perspective correct textures for the win! Who needs high resolution textures when you have "high" poly perspective correct texturing? hahah

I actually don't think, as far as technology is concerned, that the PS4 vs. XBox One battle is that similar to the PS3 vs. XBox 360 battle. In the last generation, you had the PS3 using a very novel architecture with the Cell processor. It was potentially very powerful, but less intuitive to program for than the more PC-like architecture of the 360. So, it's not surprising that some PS3 exclusives looked fantastic, but multi-platform titles often looked or performed better on the 360.

With this generation, both consoles are using an architecture that's closer to a PC than even the 360 was (no doubt great news for developers). There are just a few key differences in the hardware, like the faster RAM on the PS4. And indeed we've been seeing multi-platform games have a higher resolution or framerate on PS4 than XBox One. While I'm sure the graphics on both systems will improve as time goes on, I don't see what would cause the Xbox One to fully catch up to the PS4.

This isn't to say that the XBox One is a terrible system or anything. The graphics in exclusives like Ryse look great, and even in the multi-platform releases the differences are fairly subtle. And maybe they'll be able to do something interesting with Kinect (though I haven't seen it yet). But, as far as pure graphical power is concerned, I expect the PS4 to stay a bit ahead.

Regarding the PS3 vs the 360, I think the graphical quality really comes down to the quality of the GPU - not the CPU (ie. the Cell). I won't comment about how they compared though.

While I don't think the Xbox One can ever match the PS4 graphically, my point is that as developers understand the architecture better, they can squeeze much more power out of it. The Xbox One has more exotic hardware this time around because developers have to juggle the EDRAM memory intelligently, which ideally should make up for some of the deficiencies in RAM speed. As they get the hang of it, I suspect the gap to lessen.

If you are developing a single platform experience, you can really optimize for that target hardware and take advantage of its interesting features. (The Xbox One has some really neat things like a hardware JPG decoder and whatnot. No idea if anyone is using it)

I think Xbox Fitness is a really brilliant use of Kinect, but I suppose it isn't really a "game".

Also, in my opinion, Ryse is the best looking next-gen game. It is TERRIBLE to play, but boy is it ever pretty!
