My nightmare

The only true nightmare that I've ever had that has stuck with me was this:

I was dreaming about doing dishes in my own house and when I had finished the dishes I turned to my right, which at the time in my old house was the door we used to go into and out of the house, there stood a man who was much taller than me and dark. When I say dark I mean he was dark as far as I couldn't see his face nor could I see any features of him, but in my dream I knew this man and I knew he was important. He walked over to me and took a look at the sink, he apparently didn't like the way i had washed the dishes so he took a butcher knife out of the knife holder and turned my palm to be facing the ceiling and proceeded to cut from my arm from the wrist down towards my elbow bend. I woke up, more like jumped up, as soon as he had gone about 2 or 3 inches and I could have sworn that he was still doing it because I could still feel the knife going down my arm. I had to turn on my light and check to see if I was bleeding because it felt so real.

To this day I still do not understand what my subconscious was trying to tell me!

Sounds like a really disturbing experience...

Pretty obvious interpretation, but could there have been some expectations put upon you at the time that you were afraid of not meeting?

I'm just taking a stab in the dark, but fear of the unknown perhaps?

Madcaptianbob: As far as I remember there was no expectations upon me other than my grades in school which I was not having a problem with.

Matt: It may be, but I have always been the one to start up conversations. I met my best friend that way.

Scary! This might be a long shot but sometimes you can get nightmares to make your waking hours a bit more sunny.

IMO, people often put too much emphasis on figuring out what a dream means. The idea of being attacked with a knife is quite common in popular culture, whether it be in slasher films, Shakespeare, or the news. And that means everyone will have countless neurons devoted to it. Many scientists think that dreaming occurs while the brain is consolidating memories. As the brain builds up and breaks down various neuronal connections as we sleep, it's not surprising that it will come across these knife attack memories upon occasion and incorporate them into our dreams.
