Re: Favorite Horror Moments in Non-Scary Game
I think some people actually consider the original Bioshock to be a horror game, but assuming you don't, then the first time you see a Big Daddy is pretty horrific. Also the crazy doctor. Or splicers mourning at a casket. Or anything with Cohen. I guess the 'horror' advocates have a point, haha.
Re: Favorite Horror Moments in Non-Scary Game
Bioshock definitely had horror elements! It was a spiritual successor to System Shock after all... I enjoyed everything in Bioshock except for the shooting. It was a shame there was so much combat in the game because I think the shooting was pretty weak, but I loved to just soak in the world.

Hehe, I see what you did there. Yeah, Bioshock has a rather wet game world.matt wrote:...soak...

Re: Favorite Horror Moments in Non-Scary Game
I think the Fort Frolic level was the best part of Bioshock, which is kind of odd, since it has basically nothing to do with the rest of the game. The story just kind of gets put on pause.
I'm already terrified of mannequins, but that one part where you go to the flooded basement with all the ballerina statues and a weapon upgrade station, and when you use it and turn around and all the ballerina statues are gone? And then you go back out and all the statues that were in the bar upstairs are gone too? I crapped. I crapped my pants. Not really. But a little.
It didn't help that the statue splicers didn't say anything to notify their presence. You had to listen for the plaster sprinkling to the ground as they crawled on the ceiling...oooooh god I crapped again.
EDIT: I knew there was an example I was forgetting! I've never played Thief: Deadly Shadows myself, so I can't say this with complete integrity, but come on, look at this:

I did enjoy the return to Rapture in the Infinite DLC, but it was too brief. Did anyone play Bioshock 2? Is it worth playing? I skipped it because it wasn't 2K Irrational, and it seemed like 2K was just cashing in on Bioshock's success, but I guess the Gone Home guys worked on it, so maybe it's cool? I dunno. Anyone?

Bioshock 2 is ok. I think it depends on what you get out of the game. I didn't like the plot of Bioshock 2 as much because I felt like it really was too closely trying to follow the econo-political themes of Bioshock.
Bioshock 2's undertone is a Socialist revolution in Rapture in response to the Anarcho-Libertarianism of the first game...which felt very half-baked to me. It lacked the philosphical depth of the first game and more seemed to ask, "Well ok what's the opposite of Libertarianism? Socialism...ok let's do that". But it's a very shallow counter-point to the wonderful political dystopia of the first game.
Playing as a Big Daddy was weird to me as well, considering you move just as fast as a normal FPS dude except you have a huge drill.
I don't regret playing it, but it certainly is not as magical for me as 1 and 3. It reminds me of a Direct-to-Video Disney sequel. If you really love Aladdin, you might enjoy Return of Jafar, but it certainly is not nearly as classic or as great

Hmmm... Doesn't sound like it'd really be my thing. Did you play the Minerva's Den DLC? The core team of that formed Fulbright Company apparently. (I imagine they had more than 4 people working on the DLC though)
