for me, the top horror game is "silent hill 2".

other great games are:

the walking dead (from telltale)
silent hill
the cat lady (oh, what a wonderfull game)
spec ops: the line (shooter with a great psychological aspect. it shows the horror of war)
dead island
clive barkers jericho
condemned: criminal origins
fahrenheit
phantasmagoria

that are the games, that i found very good, when i was playing them. sure, phantasmagoria isnt a hit today, but when i played it, it was great.

I'm actually thinking about starting Phantasmagoria. I'm not sure I can handle the dated gameplay and video quality, but I remember being a kid and getting a Sierra catalog in the mail with this 7 disc horror game and being fascinated. I had a Mac, so there were very few Sierra games I could play (maybe just Dr. Brain). Fortunately, LucasArts supported Mac with about half of their games.

Now that I switched to Windows, having a Mac is actually cool?!?! It still doesn't play all the games though...

All this talk about silent hill 2 really makes me want to try it. But I traded away the PS 2 years ago and I read lots of horrible reviews about buggy PC and xbox versions. I guess it is not in the cards for me. I am not going to ever buy a PS anything again for any reason.

edit: to clarify as I have nothing against Sony. I just feel PC games are superior to console games, so I have no intention of buying anymore consoles for my entertainment. My PC is a monster gaming platform. A console could not even dream about coming close to it.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent easily makes the top of my horror games list. It's given me more genuine chills than any other game I've played. Giving you no weapons makes it a true survival horror, and it relies more on building and deepening an atmosphere of crushing dread than cheap jump scares.

I liked Dead Space (just played the first) but the game arms you so well so early on that it kills a lot of the tension. You can just blast your way through most problems, which leaves mostly annoying (although admittedly effective) jump scares.

Dark Fall: The Journal is an older point and click adventure that isn't outright in your face horror, but still involves a horror game setting and spooky goings-on.

Scratches was another point and click horror that is also aging pretty quickly but I still mostly liked. It's weighed down heavily by some pretty brutal and finicky puzzles though.

It's hard to say what my favorite scary game is, because there are so many ways to BE scary, and different ways of going about it.

But, if I had to narrow it down to a top 5, in no particular order, I would say, for their own reasons:

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
System Shock 2
Siren
Silent Hill

Nightmare House 2. In all seriousness, everyone here should play that game. It's free, it's a Mod/TC for Half Life 2, and it is one of if not THE scariest game I've ever played. It's the bar for me when it comes to horror games. Brilliantly made, and very very well done.

http://nh2.wecreatestuff.com/ Do try it, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Me and my friends have "spoopy game nights" where we play horror games, Witch's House, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Penumbra and the like, and Nightmare house was the one we had to trade off while playing, it was just too spooky.

Even though it's not a horror game, I recommend to give "Spec Ops: The Line" a shot to everyone. It's a war-themed TPS with more or less expectable gameplay, but with an absolutely awesome anti-war story. And the setting, well, that really made me consider visiting of Dubai.

Yager Develoment executive said that they want to try to do something less complicated now, so that their writers can rest for a while in order to bring us another piece of brilliant storytelling in the future. I look forward to it. These guys are even more talented than the Telltale crew.

Not really my favorite, but perhaps the most interesting game besides NN is Alone. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/928 ... 1?ref=live. I have not played it, but the videos of people playing it make it seem awesome. You play a game in a game, tricking your mind into blurring reality from the game. Very fascinating.

Clive Barker's Jericho?
Hah, what a cheesy piece of crap. And don't get me wrong, I love it for it! I think I'll make a Let's Play of it eventually because I enjoy it so much, despite being quite repetitive with most of the characters being rather unlikeable.
Still, something about the setting, the idea of the time slices, of travelling back through time with all these different horrors twisted by tragedy and centuries of grief, it really is something.
The villains in particular make that game, where the protagonists largely fail in my opinion.
