So what are you guys listening to? (A music thread)

Post by JPrice »

Now we're getting off-topic here!
As well as games, music is a large part of my life (Not necessarily playing but listening really). I have like over 350+ CD's in my collection here as well as a number of Vinyl's and I hope for it to grow.

With that said I was just wondering what you guys have been listening to recently? Are there any underground bands that you feel like sharing? Whatever it is :D

I'll start with this bedroom project called "Plini" that I've been digging recently. Progressive rock vibes here, rather chill stuff I must say :)

Full EP if you're interested - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywlWkkNl19U

Also there's Cedron's Chased by Shades which is some pretty great Melodic Hardcore from Sweden

Song called "Lost Woods" off the album - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUZSTJVRqmI

Feel free to share whatever you want too guys! :D

The gem that is Berserk for PS2 had an excellent composer. On a side note the animation motion-cap system used to make that game is impressive compared to even PS3 and Xbox 360 games.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSKMqKHQrh8

Attack on Titan's soundtrack continues to be worthy enough to regulary listen to. Below are just 3 of many great songs.
DOA has very good lyrics like "Jump on the necks of monsters!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEwWuPjIscw
The Reluctant Heroes is good looped while playing the fan game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl1IpUGsf0I
The opening song is famous for going with almost anything like the Guile theme from Streetfighter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LokfXspsnaI

Here are some other soundtracks that overall I found fantastic.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is hard to tire of.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcpGIVbPYrI
Persona 4 had my favourite soundtrack of that franchise.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoyxcvCkA7Y
Gatchaman Crowds had a unique feel to it. It was a departure from the norm for a franchise with an origin in 1972.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rcwTUbUFX0
Sacred Seven had good action with very good music to go along with that action, but it was not a well written show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyquwcNGPL8
The dot hack franchise had a lot of soundtrack gems.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUrU0gu2mN0
Log Horizon is a show about players stuck in a MMO. Its opening is catchy with lines like "Database Database Just living in a Database".

Personally, I preferred Berserk for the Dreamcast, but I did like Berserk for PS2 quite a bit.
I have strange taste in music. I've been listening to Autechre - L-event, Dubcon - UFO pon di gullyside, and Phil Western - Demethol

L-Event is very very obtuse, and I'm not quite sure where I stand on it, but Autechre's first album Incunabala is one of my favorite CDs of all time.

Some of my other favorites are:
Download - III
Nautilis - Are you an Axolotl (Nautilis is Skyler McGlothlin, the composer of Retro/Grade and Neverending Nightmares)
Aphex Twin - The Richard D. James Album
Skinny Puppy - Everything before 1995

Some other artists I really love that I have trouble picking favorites are Mogwai, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Thursday, Zao, and Errors. I have very eclectic tastes!

Also, the Panzer Dragoon soundtracks are the best game soundtracks ever in my opinion. :)

I haven't sought out much new music lately, so I've just been listening to older stuff I have. I did buy the "Of Monsters and Men" CD a couple months ago though, I liked it so much. It's far from underground or anything and it's currently all over the radio, but I really dig it, they have a very mellow yet also very big and energetic sound at the same time. The whole thing is still up on Youtube surprisingly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV2zf_B53wY

I keep going back to Agalloch, I love melodic folk metal or whatever they're called lately, it's probably more prog rock really. I'm completely lost when it comes to subgenres of music.
Pale Folklore is my favorite, but Ashes Against the Grain is also really good and a bit heavier/more accessible on a song by song basis. Both full albums are up on Youtube!

And I've been playing Unter Null a lot lately. Destroy Me is a good intro track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO-HonoVSGs

I'm all over the place with music.

Some rather eclectic tastes here I see hahaha :D

Well seeing as we're all looking forward to a horror game here I'll recommend something appropriate.
When I first heard this it was late at night around like 2am, gotta be honest it creeped me out something fierce.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npf__nPK0AQ
Band's called Stagnant Waters. It's like if you took black metal and mixed it with electronica, then just placed it inside the mind of a psychotic killer. Rather distressing result to say the least!

It's not an underground band, but I love Flogging Molly. Similar, but not better yet, is Rumjacks. It looks like I suffer from some kind of fixation on Irish tunes.

What can be considered underground bands, are Totalni nasazeni, Volant and Dilemma in Cinema. I don't really listen to the world's punk music, but its Czech "branch" is really awesome.

I have a very ecclectic taste. But I can tell I'm the forums alt-rock and indie guy... but that's not all I listen to. My other passion beyond games is music. We're gonna jump around just a little here in sounds.

So far this year I've been loving Parquet Courts and Speedy Ortiz! Feels like the 90's all over again to me. My sister was a big alternative rock fan in the 90's and these two just scream inspiration of Pavement, Nirvana and Sunny Day Real Estate to me. Maybe I should bust out my SNES and play Super Metroid while listening to these to complete the effect...

Master of Mycraft - Parquet Courts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UFzde_Y_t0

Kaprow! - Speedy Ortiz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4-X-KlJiUk

Japandroids and Queens of the Stone Age are my two all time favorite bands. When I'm bored usually you can find me with their stuff playing in the background.

Younger Us - Japandroids (love this song because it reminds me of my best friend.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m6Ptx4CV6k

Another Love Song - Queens of the Stone Age (was listening to this a lot because of Halloween. QOTSA are good Halloween music. :) Them and The Misfits.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ09znlHeng

I was gonna buy Arcade Fire's new album really soon. LOVE Reflektor. Really goorvy over all. You can tell James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem produced it and assisted with some of the song writing. His stamp is all over this song. Really love that about music. When you can instantly pickout someones calling card just by hearing it.
Arcade Fire - Reflektor

My biggest surprise of the year so far has been Disclosure's fantastic self-titled album. I'm usually not into electronic music (save for Daft Punk) but this album has a lot of really wonderfully well written catchy songs. Astounding use of composition and using technology to do all sorts of weird things with sounds.
Disclosure - Latch (ft. Sam Smith)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93ASUImTedo
Dat swimming note hold on Sam Smith's vocals before the second chorus. Good lord, that makes my head spin every time I hear it. Really good song and great record.

Of course I'd be remiss to not talk about Random Access Memories after mentioning Daft Punk... By Giorgio Moroder is probably the best song they've written. Not my favorite, but all the moving parts of that song, the way it builds up, every thing is just satisfyingly done. Not to mention I really appreciate it's a song about a guy who was a big inspiration on their lives but also features him talking about his early days and the moment he pretty much invented the electronic music scene. Pretty awe-inspiring stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5m4ZkEqQrn0

And as far as metal goes, I haven't been too impressed with a lot of the metal scene lately. I'm from Atlanta, Georgia so I'm all into that nasty rumble that sludge metal provides. (I.E. Mastodon and High On Fire are my jam.) Really only two metal bands have made me take note this year.

Deafheaven's album Sunbather is a must listen if you like black metal and post-rock. Great fussion of those things done in a major key. (uplifting happy sounding metal that sounds like the singer from Mayhem is having an emotional fit!)
Deafheaven - Dream House.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWyVhIBmdGw
That intro alone might win this my personal album of the year. Feels good when those drums hit. >:)

In Solitude are like a mixture of metal and rock. But they do it all in the service of THE DARK LORD! \m/ These guys have lyrics ALL ABOUT them black mass rituals and satanic suicides. I think what attracts me to this is the same thing that really gets me when I see a good horror movie or play a good horror game. I appreciate things that can unsettle me. But then they hit those catchy rock and roll style choruses and I remember "It's just a song! :)" It's no worse than when I listened to Opeth for the first time in middle school and that unnerved me with its song writing and subject matter. It's dark stuff! But that's what catches my attention about it. Really love the guitar riff in this. Sounds like it's up to no good. Mischeif and sacrifice abound! In Solitude - Death Knows Where. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frtslKbrokg
Sounds like what would happen if Black Sabbath were from Norway.

That's just what I've been rotating the most this year. Don't even get me digging in on what Lou Reed's passing away has gotten me listening to... lol
RightClickSaveAs wrote:Ashes Against the Grain
Good lord I love that album... Remember finding it in a music store and thinking the album art was crazy looking and the songs had cool names. Figured I'd give it a whirl. No regrets... also found Modest Mouse that way. Good News For People Who Love Bad News had JUST come out and was on the new releases rack. Hadn't heard anything off of it (Float On wasn't on rotation on the radio for a good month or two after I bought it) and loved every moment of it. Agalloch are criminally underrated.

If you like metal, have you listened to The Dillinger Escape Plan? They are amazing. Their last two albums I don't think were as good as their earlier ones but it amazing stuff.

Also, if you don't care about understanding what the singer says (I can never understand even in English metal), you should check out Envy, an amazing Japanese metal/screamo/post hardcore band. Their stuff is absolutely brilliant!

Yeah, man! If you had caught me a few years ago, that was one of those bands I listened to because of how nutso technical they were. Really blew my mind. They weren't the first time I heard anything like that, but they had personality to it that I appreciated more than other bands doing nutty math metal things. Turns out those guys were just DEP derivative bands. I still love Miss Machine. Good album. Little things like the title of this song paying homage to one of my all time favorite bands is what I mean by personality. Panasonic Youth. I think Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth would appreciate this kind of odd nod to them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niWdUoTVSto

Any Pantera fans here? I can't stand Phil Anselmo anymore, but I keep listening because of how good natured I knew Dimebag Darrel to be. RIP(pin' up hot solos in the afterlife) Dimebag. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7EQlfprV9E

Ahhhh I do like me some The Dillinger Escape Plan! Though I prefer other tech metal bands more.

I recommend these guys for sure if you like eratic fast paced stuff like Dillinger:
