interesting dustforce sales article

Hey Matt, I came across this blog article on the sales data for dustforce written by the developers. If you haven't seen it you might find some of it interesting. It surprised me that the midweek madness sale they did on Steam didn't generate any word of mouth sales despite selling a ton of units, w...

Re: Nightmares stemming from OCD

No problem! Also, if you are concerned that the monster itself would muck up the place while chasing me (living in a toilet and all), it was actually a rather clean monster. It was nothing like The Great Mighty Poo, despite sharing TGMP's vulnerability to flushing toilets. Our monster (my father's a...

Re: Nightmares stemming from OCD

Great point ranger_lennier! I guess I forgot to mention how I dealt with the hygienic repercussions of the toilet monster. So I sometimes washed my hands before flushing, then I went to the bathroom and flushed before running to the bed. But usually I would instead wash after the bed-post ritual. I ...

Re: Nightmares stemming from OCD

It occurred to me this morning that since your game is 2-d and it is hard to implement convincing mirrors in the background, you might consider trying to use shiny reflective floors instead. Obviously the character's reflection will be upside down if you do this, but you could probably still achieve...

Re: The Metaphysics of Retro/Grade

Wow, that's pretty cool that the main themes I picked up on were close to what you intended. This suggests to me that a lot of players picked up on what you were trying to wordlessly communicate. It also says a lot about video games as a unique means of artistic expression, as well as for what you m...

Re: The "Retro" within Retro/Grade

I suppose I overreached about some of these retro-references like the blocky shadows and why the noir mode uses French. I guess I may have also been wrong about the hypersphere being a reference to Spaceship Earth, but in any case the geodesic structure a still a nice throwback to 1960's postmodern ...

Re: Questions about Retro/Grade

Ahh, I completely forgot about the missiles. I see how that would have made max scores impossible- or at least physically impossible, since I assume the maximum score on absorbing missiles would still be restrained by the game's frame-refresh rate? But I guess even the amazing Rick Rocket is incapab...

Re: Nightmares stemming from OCD

I really love Arkham's mirror ideas if they fit with your story and you can figure out how to technically pull it off in the game. I was creeped out just by reading them. If you can't do mirrors for technical reasons, maybe you might be able to achieve a similar effect by using shadow outlines, wher...

Re: Questions about Retro/Grade

Hi Matt, Thanks for answering my question. I noticed during my Astro Admiral runs that the overthrusters (and other powerups) always came at the same time, so I figured you used an optimum scoring algorithm to calculate starting scores similar to what you described, but I wasn't sure. It certainly c...

The "Retro" within Retro/Grade

Hi everyone, of the many details in Retro/Grade, I think it is particularly fun to try noticing are the numerous references to the 80's and some even earlier. Some are quite hidden: for example, the Octobot and Rick Rocket's ship cast a blocky, two-dimensional shadow on the back wall of the level th...
