Neverending Nightmares wikipedia page?

Post by matt »

There isn't one! :( I'm tempted to make one myself, but that is bad wikipedia form. I suppose I could put the basics up, but I'm wondering if someone else might be willing to put something up there. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but it'd be nice to just have a basic page.

As a side note, you'd be surprised how many publishers write their own wikipedia pages. I was trying to find the release date of Murdered: Soul Suspect, and I stumbled on its wikipedia page. Look at all of those awards listed with no citations! I'm not a betting man, but I think it's an extremely safe bet that someone working for Airtight or Square Enix posted that info on the page..

Sounds good, I'll dust off my old wikipedia account and see if I can remember its weird markup language!

Haha those awards do look slightly suspicious: "Most Valuable Game", and "Best Game You Heard Nothing about", are those legitimate things? Once Neverending Nightmares is released, does that mean you're free to bestow upon it the prestigious "Most Scariest and Terrifying Horror Game Ever You Should Buy This Now" award?

Update: OK I put up a barebones page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverending_Nightmares

Is 2013 when you started developing the game or was it earlier than that? If you want me to add anything specific just let me know and I'll toss it up there.

"Survival horror" was the closest genre I could find on Wikipedia that matched.

I'm going to have trouble finding specific sources to cite if that ever becomes an issue. I don't think it's a big deal especially for just a small, basic page, but pretty much everything I know comes from the forums here and the developer diaries, which would be hard to cite specifically.

I know there are some good writers hanging around on these forums so please feel free to punch up the descriptions!

Annnnnd it's already been proposed for deletion  That was quick.

I'm remembering why I stopped contributing to Wikipedia, for a completely free and open site that anyone can edit there are a ton of buried rules and regulations. It makes your head spin.

You could always go for a TV Tropes page...

I know there must be some tropers on here, and they're way less regulated than Wikipedia. I know it's not nearly as legit as a wikipedia page, but it's better than nothing...

Actually I was just thinking about this, and there are plenty of Kickstarter pages up for games that haven't released yet, so I'm going to contest this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkest_Dungeon

Alright, it looks like we're fine for the time being. Matt, I know you think it's bad form to edit it yourself, but what would you like to see added or changed? And is there anything in particular (like an interview or a preview somewhere) that you would like mentioned and sourced?

Wow, you guys are awesome! Technically, I started writing the design docs in December of 2012, and we got a few sketches, but work began in earnest of 2013.

We should probably put the release date, then we could be on this page.

You can link to the release date (September 2014) from this article, which is quite good. I’ve seen other indie games with the following in their sidebar:
Mode(s) - Single-player
Distribution - Online distribution
Maybe that is helpful making the page less of an “orphan”?

As far as articles, my favorites are: Perhaps we could link to them or cite them somehow?

Thank you so much! :-D

I'd say the best thing you can do is cite independent sources. Don't just say it draws upon Matt's experience with mental illness--quote Matt as saying that in an interview with a major game site like Polygon. And do the same thing with the art style, plot, etc. Wikipedia doesn't allow independent research, so you can't just ask Matt here and use that (though he can certainly suggest topics, articles, etc.). You could also mention sites that list the game as one to look forward to, or something along those lines, like IGN's list here.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/29/ ... on-in-2014

As for "orphans", that doesn't mean the article doesn't link to anything, it means no other articles link to Neverending Nightmares. I didn't realize that Skyler McGlothlin had his own Wikipedia page. It looks like someone's already taken care of linking to Neverending Nightmares on that one.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautilis_(artist)

I went ahead and updated the Ouya article, which already has a section on the Free The Games fund.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouya#Free_the_Games_Fund

It needed to be updated anyway, since it talked about the early controversy, but not all of the rule changes that brought about. I added this paragraph:

Many developers criticized the fund's rules. Sophie Houlden removed her game, Rose and Time, from the Ouya marketplace. [53] Matt Gilgenbach, who was trying to finance his game Neverending Nightmares with help from the fund, said, "It would kill me if due to other projects abusing the Free the Games Fund, people lost confidence in our project and what we are trying to do...While I believe in the idea of the Free the Games Fund, I think it definitely could use some reform in light of the potential avenues for abuse." [54] Eventually, Uhrman accepted this criticism. "Developers were telling us over and over, 'You’re being too idealistic, and you’re being too naive'...That was the part that personally took me a while to understand." Ouya changed the fund rules, including adding a dollar-per-backer limit. Houlden put her game back on the store, and Neverending Nightmares qualified for funding under the new rules. [53]

And these are the citations:

https://gigaom.com/2013/10/31/ouya-ceo- ... d-trouble/

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/09/13/never ... the-games/

Does the orphan note get generated automatically, or should we just remove it now? (Assuming two links is even enough.)

I am tempted to do the french wikipedia page but I believe it'll be deleted if I submit it before the release of Neverending Nightmare (I don't know, I'll ask my boyfriend)

!!WARNING!! THIS IS A LINK TO TV TROPES. I CANNOT PERSONALLY BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HOURS OF PRODUCTIVITY INEVITABLY LOST BY CLICKING THIS LINK.

Alright, it's really tenuous, and I'd appreciate some help, but I got the TV Tropes page for Neverending Nightmares up and running. If you have suggestions for tropes, trivia, or indexes to file the game in, let me know.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to add the disclaimer.
