Game Crashes Shortly After I Start Playing

The game loads just fine and I can adjust options and I can start the game. The first time I played, I was able to view the opening cinematic and walk out of the first room. When I reached the first door in the hallway, the game would simply crash. Now that I've rebooted my computer, I can't even leave the first room before it crashes. Any advice? What more information can I provide?

I'm using Windows Vista Service pack 2, Intel Core 2, Radeon HD 5700

Oh wow. That is really strange. I haven't seen that before. A few questions:
1) Do you have the latest drivers for your video card?
2) What version are you playing? (GoG, Steam, Humble, etc)
3) What sort of crash message do you get? Is it the standard Windows one? Our custom one that says "We are sorry. Neverending Nightmares has crashed."?

I'm so sorry you are having problems, and I'll see if we can't figure out what's going wrong.

one thing that will likely help is to paste your system specs for Matt to review. You can do this by cliking the "Start" buttom in windows and in the search field type the word DXDIAG.EXE and hit enter. it should either load or find your Directx diagnostics program, which has a button to "save all information". do this to your desktop or somewhere you can find it, open the file (if you just double click on it it'll open in notepad normally) and copy paste th results into a post here.

It will be a lot of info so you may hit the character limit for posts, then possibly split it to 2 if needed (though double posting is forbidden, I'd imagine in this case they might give exception).

There shouldn't be any personal or private info in the diagnostics, it just lists a lot of specs about your hardware and system. With that Matt should be able to better ascertain if there is a problem spot. Though he may not, even with all this it is a needle-in-a-haystack kind of situation.

Here are the answers to your questions:

1) Yes, my video card drivers are up to date. I just checked.
2) I'm playing a version from Steam
3) I receive no crash message at all. The game just stops for a second and then stops. I end up back on the desktop and the exe is no longer running.

However, after rebooting once again, it seems to be performing just fine and I am able to play the game. I'm not sure why I suddenly have the ability, but all seems well. Thank you for your fast response!

may have been the steam client bootstrapper. I have seen this with other games where you play something and exit but the steam bootstrapper gets stuck and every game you load after has issues. I usually end up force-shutting it down in the Task Manager and then doing a memory defrag to clear out anything resident and "lost". then all is good.

Glad it is back to working!

I'm so glad it's working! If there is no crash message, that usually means that Steam is having an issue launching the game. Those are hard for me to debug since it's Valve's code. :)

I'm having the same problem again. I was only able to play successfully that one time. Every other time it crashes about ten seconds into game play. I have tried stopping the Bootstrap program, but with no luck.
What else could I try?

Thank you!

Couple simple things to try just to test.

1: see fi you can run the game in a window instead of full screen, as well set the options for the game ot run in a fairly low resolution to see if it takes longer to crash or about the same.
2: turn off the sound entirely to see if it still crashes. Are you using the special headphone mode he has as an option?

Does it seem to crash at 10 seconds in even if you aren't moving the character or interacting? or does it do it when you walk through the first door? at the menu screen? intro cutscenes?

Ok, I've tried the suggestions. Windowed mode and low resolution both resulted in a crashed game. Turning off the sound also resulted in that, as well as the special headphone option. It was initially off, but I turned it on to see if that made a difference.

It's definitely not time-based. It happens when I start playing the game. I wake up and I start to walk to the door. Sometimes it happens right as I reach the door and sometimes it happens a little before. If I stand still, it doesn't crash. I just tested it out now for a few minutes. If I pace around in front of the bed, it happens after a little bit, though.

The very first time I was having this problem, it always happened after I made it through the first door, but before I could reach the second. Now, I've never been able to make it out the first door, except for the mysterious circumstances that led to me being able to play it temporarily.

I'm still guessing but it sounds like something is getting called up and causing the game to fail. I am going to assume you completely uninstalled the game at some point AND went into "my documents" and made sure all files for NeN were also deleted out? I'm wondering if the "autosave" is failing as you approach the door (or is there a timed autosave as well?) ? Maybe the base save file is corrupt, or can't get access rights to save over itself. I am forgetting but have you tried running the game as admin? (you'd have to locate the base Neverendingnightmares.exe file and right click to try running in administrative mode). which also begs the question, are you as a user on the pc an admin, guest, or just a "user" and maybe there is security issues?

otherwise, my only other guess is that something about the drivers for your video card or direct x is NOT liking the game. what other games run ok on the video card? is it a physical card or onboard chipset?
